DOWN HERE: MUSIC?
Old video, still rings. Sean Baxter laying it down.
Music Your Mind Will Love You – the collective/label from the NSW highlands/QLD border – was killed, buried quite a while ago with Pacific Soma briefly taking over. Now it’s Hashram (read my write-up here). But what about the hundred-plus recordings lost in the process? Stuck under a few beds, houses. I’ve lost some of my copies.
With help from the enthusiastic folks behind the exotic blog We Have No Zen, MYMWLY will live on at least digitally: They’re slowly uploading the old recordings for everyone to enjoy again or for the first time via the Music Your Mind Still Love You project. Here, you’ll find it in the pre-birth stage but with a couple of recordings there for you all-ready: Alligator Crytal Moth, Akhet, Innig, Blank Realm, Rmeaajlmik, 6Majik9. Along with the blessed uploads, there’s handful of reviews & interviews. Hopefully the project will be fully realised but it’s a massive undertaking, it’s slow, keep an eye on it and perhaps contribute.
Sky Needle live at the NOWnow Festival 2011, Sydney Australia from OtherFilm on Vimeo.
Brisbane’s Sky Needle vs. Sydney a few weeks back at the NOWnow Festival (2011). I believe there’s something new, a tape through Alberts Basement (‘Neckliner’, x100, Jan’11) going on from the sold-out 7″ (‘Time Hammer’, x200, Independent Exhibitions, Nov’09). They’re performing tomorrow, supporting Omar at the Vinyl Bar. Free.
I’ve got an audio bootleg of their show at Burst City mid last-year. Turned out alright.

xNoBBQx – Live at Real Bad Music, 19th December 2010:
Both videos uploaded & edited by Josh Watson, shot by Joel Stern. Graciously republished here with permission. Keep a tab on this channel for more videos of other acts around town.
This coincides with the live bootleg of Tony Irving I posted here.

Amateur Childbirth – ‘Womb Envy’ (from Brighter Futures Dialysis (Wet Nurse Directory))
Local, from the Wet Nurse Directory private label. Debut, bedroom floor oft-frenetic pop-folk solo acoustic guitar with equally absurd and brilliant lyrics of which I’m obsessed here (“line your friends up in a row and tell them where to go”, “you are the breath that inspires my lungs and encourages gas exchange that makes my blood pump”) then also dealing out some stream-o-consciousness (“fireworks ejaculate from my screaming placenta”, “I vomit a rainbow down your asthmatic windpipe and then leave your heart go unextinguished”) delivered to an exhausting closure; each song is filled/corner painted twice over with twisted ruminations on life v fantasy & a distant muse. The album ‘Brighter Futures Dialysis’ is up for grabs or download over at the official WND website, or stream the whole thing over at BandCamp. See also: Paedophile Flowchart.

Hashram is the inheritor of Music Your Mind Will Love You – the mind-expanding music collective/label from the far-north NSW highlands/QLD border – and it’s been operational since September, headed again of course by the mystic shaman Michael Donnelly (Terracid, Soarwhole, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, 6Majik9).
Hashram is already up to it’s 11th offering, the large bulk of the catalog being 6Majik9 & old jams wherein but there’s also Terracid, Asylum Seekers (live in Moorooka, 3 members from 6Majik9 with Joel Stern (Sky Needle, Abject Leader) and Sarah Spencer (Blank Realm)), Carhunt, Ffehro, and the flagship Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood.
Without skin or bone, layed down & soaking into the carpet fibers on the lounge room floor; gauzy cloud of introspective 70s psych-downer, something to greet the sun after years stuck on the other side of the planet.
Terracid – ‘Who Where You’ (from Dissolution (C90, hashram009)
Asbestos lungs. Lurid, directionless madness from the house across the street with no doors.
6Majik9 – ‘Garbage Lung’ (from Drugrun2 (c46, hashram005)
Mountain-dwelling druids, ritualistic mind-warping improvisations incense burning rites uttered.
Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood – ‘Fly Summers Knife’ (from Delight Rods (c46, hashram007)
MYMWLY was closed down quite some time ago with long-planned Pacific Soma label taking it’s place but ultimately the only offering was in the form of one co-released recording (with Finnish label Ikuisuus) – ‘Grass Openings’ by Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood back in September 2009. The MYMWLY catalog was deleted, apparently, according to the old blog (that itself has been removed too) but you can still get the odd piece from a distributor or if you ask around.
Oh, in case you missed it: My bootleg of 6Majik9 at Burst City, 18 July 2010 (full set, sounds good). And this blog’s author is a massive fan of MYMWLY et al, straight from some foreign land.
2. MSHING
MSHING – 1289 (Trapdoor Tapes)
Post-gig, post-afterparty with a bunch of cunts you’re not even sure actually existed (who am I?), slowly coming down hard and there’s no place to pass-out – commence the Monday 4AM Death March home; Trepanned and hanging off the Victoria Bridge rails you’re never going to make it…
Brisbane has the worst public transport system, something that is reinforced every time I use it (which is actually all the time – I’m late for everything). If you stay out past 11PM from Sunday to Thursday you’re pretty much fucked until 6AM when the bus drivers decide to turn up for work (sometimes). So, you have to do the Death March home with your mind blown, leaking out of your skull and possibly becoming a major traffic hazard.
1. PORTAL
Portal formed around 1994(?) in Brisbane. A handful of releases, scattered rituals since. I think this song is about Moorooka.
Information: From the NSW highlands, Michael Donnelly of the Pacific Soma/Music Your Mind Will Love You labels (and of the bands Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, 6Majik9, Innig, Soarwhole to name a few).
Notable recordings: ‘The Evacuation of Earth’ (CDR, MYMWLY0003), ‘Transcendent Reign Inheritor’ (CDR, MYMWLY0019), ‘Fortress of Eternal Smells’ (MYMWLY0039), ‘Pinnacles Upon Aesthetes In Glorious Bows’ (MYMWLY0063), ‘Fortress’ (CS, Inverted Crux), ‘Glass Baudelaire’ (CS, Inverted Crux). This is only a small list due to all information being sketchy at best and releases were pumped out everywhere, some limited, etc. Check out Discogs below or go for a long search.
Links: Pacific Soma – MySpace // Terracid – Last.fm // A good interview back in 2006 // Terracid – Discogs // Search Foxy Digitalis ‘Terracid’ (they love this project) // It’s hard to find anything official – aside from the MySpace page there (though it looks long abandoned) – as both PS & MYMWLY has essentially been wiped from the Internet, only articles remain. It’s best to contact MYMWLY via email or something.
Media: I’ve personally only ever seen Michael perform under the Terracid moniker once and this was way back in November 2008 during the Breakdance Your Mind five-day festival (of which was spread across various venues & a park in Brisbane). Terracid performed in a shop called ‘Book Nook‘ on West End’s Boundary Street – you had to walk up a flight of stairs and down a hallway toward the back of a building block right up in an unassuming corner entrance.
The space was very small, cramped even with just 25-odd people in attendance but as a result it was also intimate and they hosted a slew of great shows in it’s limited lifetime as a ‘space’ – some of the later ASPC meetings, 6Majik9 (yet another band featuring Michael (and perhaps the most well known outside of BOTOS) performed for a couple of hours one night, The Spiders, This Imperial Can, Candlesnuffer, Jon Dale, to only name a few off the top of the brain.
Book Nook, the store, did close it’s doors & only trade online for a while but in January 2010 it relocated to Toowoomba to become a brick & mortar store yet again.
This a two-part video of Terracid performing at Book Nook, the same night also featured Breakdance the Dawn‘s head-honcho Matt Earle performing solo as Muura, Black Petal‘s Anthony Guerra (solo), and although I did miss him due to my tardiness that night I think Adam Sussman (Stasis Duo) also performed earlier on.

Media: I’d just like to repost this video because, well, holy shit! It’s great! That’s the IMA‘s toilet block hallway there and I guess this was in 2006. Two old gents of the Brisbane experimental/noise circles producing an impenetrable racket with turntables, contact mics, delays and fevered drum work – on-lookers not knowing what to do or think just smiling / disorientated / just smiling.
Information: Sunshine Coast’s Trapdoor Tapes & friends-helmed grind v. HP & Skvll worship with a heavy political edge.
Known recordings: ‘Capitalist Scum’ CDR released by Trapdoor Tapes (TT015)
There’s no filler on this release, comes in just 3.35mins with 9 songs and it’s just an all out drive-by punch-in-the-nuts listening experience. The fifth track ‘Radiation Nation‘ was included on Magik Crowbar & Destination Failure’s Scvm compilation (alongside but not withstanding Occult Blood, CTV, Neckhold, Scummy Gums, Pathetic Human…) but my favorite is the closer ‘Scum’…
