DOWN HERE #4: RADIATION NATION

RADIATION NATION

Information: Sunshine Coast’s Trapdoor Tapes & friends-helmed grind v. HP & Skvll worship with a heavy political edge.

Known recordings: ‘Capitalist Scum’ CDR released by Trapdoor Tapes (TT015)

There’s no filler on this release, comes in just 3.35mins with 9 songs and it’s just an all out drive-by punch-in-the-nuts listening experience. The fifth track ‘Radiation Nation‘ was included on Magik Crowbar & Destination Failure’s Scvm compilation (alongside but not withstanding Occult Blood, CTV, Neckhold, Scummy Gums, Pathetic Human…) but my favorite is the closer ‘Scum’…

DOWN HERE #3: GYANISM

GYANISM

Information: Scott Sinclair – drums, voice (also of Company Fuck, Botborg), Yusuke Akai – electric guitar, electronics, voice (also of The Mute Canary Project, Taste of Teeth), Joel Stern – trumpet, electronics, voice (also of Abject Leader, Impromptulons, Sky Needle), Daiji Igarashi – electric guitar, electronics, voice (also of The Night of Love).

Known recordings: ‘An Interstate Pugilist’ CDR released by Music Your Mind Will Love You (MYMWLY098),  ‘Yr Nicked’ 3″ CDR released by Half/Theory (HALF07)

‘Yr Nicked’ is loud. Really fucking loud. It’s apparently a live document of a show at the Globe Theatre in Brisbane – 17/12/2005, too (sound-tracking The Bill(!?)). Harsh electronics, battered guitars and drums with over-the-top, off-the-meds screaming and horns wailing in the background. With headphones on it’s akin to simulated electroshock treatment. A sampled voice comes in at around the fifth minute “That’s right mate, that’s what I said mate” over a small relatively subdued break only to build up to another weird tier and finally some kind of rhythm with the blown-out drums taking lead. Eventually the chaos resides and the horns play a bigger part, the screaming has been replaced with multi-voiced wordless tangents, and with ever-present ear-piercing electronics keeping the tension up it’s an overall unsettling ~20 minutes in total, surely to send your khaki-toting friends out of the room and questioning your mental state nevermind the loonies behind the speakers; Let’s just put this one back in the drawer and go outside for a while.

DOWN HERE #2: HILLSPIRIT

HILLSPIRIT

Information: Fucked-up, loose guitar/drum/effects skronk from Trapdoor Tapes and friends.

Known recordings: S/T CS released by Trapdoor Tapes (TT031),  ‘Occult of Lamb’s Blood’ CDR (TT039)

3 tracks on the CDR release: 1. Lambs Blood 2. Ragwort 3. Hollow Hills, presumably a single live session it’s split up into three tracks running to a close in just under 11 minutes. Total free-form exercise, heavily stoned jam session with strong percussion over the struck, beaten guitars, effects, junk, first track finds it’s legs toward the end with a nice drum down-beat then straight into track two where the pace propels as if the druids behind the instruments fly into a thrashing, panic state with a effected, tremolo-chopped sound coming in only to close out with the track three come-down all-out raucous racket. Flies past the first listen, repeated plays finds the layers underneath the imposing mess and revealed overall rhythmic sound on the otherwise written-off bookends.

DOWN HERE #1: THE WHITE PETUNIAS

THE WHITE PETUNIAS

Information: Features Joel Stern (trumpet, electronics — also of Abject Leader, Impromptulons, Sky Needle), Jamie Hume (vocals, tapes — also of Year of the Sex Olympics/Auchenflower Red Light District, The Perfect Lovers), and Anthony Guerra (guitar — also of Your Intestines, Antipan, Black Petal label).

Known recordings: ‘The Last Resort’ C60 released by Breakdance the Dawn (BDTD14), ‘No Way Out’ CS (??)

Other: I saw them perform at the Globe Theatre in 2008 during the Breakdance Your Mind festival, here’s what I thought of them (Esoteric Glee Club #9, Breakdance Your Mind festival, Globe Theatre, 26/11/08 – taken from the Aug’08-Oct’09 archives):

“…Five minutes into White Petunias set, they’re really going at it: The full-on intensity of the music added with Jamie Hume standing in front of the stage, creating a silhouette, and the flashing, spastic lights is near overwhelming. It’s strange to walk into the room, everybody fixated and rarely blinking, staring at the stage – the light shining on their glazed-over expressionless faces, some try to dance but end up in a trance-like state barely doing anything more than swaying from side-to-side. At around the 20th minute, strobe lights violently flicker, Jamie stands motionless saying something I can’t understand, the rest of the band only visible through the yellow lights directed behind them – it’s an ethereal experience. Jamie sits down, lets the rest of the band finish out the set and to wind everything down…”

BOOTLEG: PER PURPOSE. THE TROUBADOUR, 22 AUG ’10

Per Purpose are made up of a few different bands around town: Glen – vox, guitar – (Kitchen’s Floor, ex-Marl Carx), Harry – bass guitar – (Loomer, Old Bag Lady (?)), Joe – drums – (Loose Grip, Bedroom Suck Records label). A logical step from ‘Carx for the frontman stripping away & moving from the confines of that DNA-comparison no-wave fucking adolescent art-punk seeya-at-the-next-houseshow attitude (though played well and great at the time it just couldn’t go anywhere) and guiding Purpose into a matured, tighter sound & a busied rhythm section no-filler approach whilst incorporating some better, weird thematic lyrics … it’s all just so much easier to, well, enjoy while outside of a dirty lounge room. People are getting into it now, a few dance to this discordant post’rs and others stand back with a smile & still nursing half a beer 25 minutes later.
