BOOTLEG: CRAFT BANDITS, WARDENBURGER. GLOW32, 26-6-10

CRAFT BANDITS

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?umfgwm5wnha

Craft Bandits is Melanie (Cupcake Club, etc), and Matt (xNoBBQx, etc)  from the incredible & prolific label Breakdance the Dawn: Originating from the Blue Mountains (NSW), recycled tapes, a $4 studio, largely word-of-mouth, inspired punk ethos.

Drifting right, right far away from the celebratory dirge I’ve seen perform this finds Craft Bandits on a sleepy, somber note both huddled in a corner with instruments strewn about – 1/3 of a drum-kit, a stressed guitar, tape recorders, xylophone – and not really playing for anyone which is exemplified by the socializing going on around them. They don’t seem to go anywhere with it rather keeping to a monotonous improvised session where only the most curious of listeners are drawn in.

I had trouble recording this as I forgot to bring a wind-protector (Burnett Lane is a wind turbine the rest of the time) and it was pretty damn hard to cut through talking & go straight for the tiny amp in the corner. Give/take.

WARDENBURGER

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?n5nejykznqq

Local super-group. S. keeps it all together with that violin. J., on vocals, throws out rubbish from a bin into the audience, climbs in. Crowd throws rubbish back, cuts out a few lines. H. & R. out the back with mixer+strings & keyboard.

BOOTLEG: LABEL PARTIES #4 (BSR). VALLEY MALL, 26-6-10

KNEE CHIN

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dmykzlmymum

This will be the third Knee Chin live bootleg recording I’ve posted here. The musical equivalent of a nice risotto cooked in a sharehouse with the always-absent housemate’s blackened pans; I think they’re “O.K.”. But seriously.

POLYFOX AND THE UNION OF THE MOST GHOSTS

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmmodmzc1n2

Polyfox is up from Newcastle (NSW). It’s a real steak & veges set, cooked by a few good friends and sitting out in the backyard, sinking a few and your phone is off so nobody interrupts the night. But really.

-

Probably should have had some kind of dinner before I left the house.

BOOTLEG: COMMUNITY. BURST CITY, 18-6-10

Remember Stemford Hiss?. Oh it’s Community.

Along with Sunshine State, supporting The Peel Street Band & Sleepwalks at Burst City. Note old mate from Yout Dem on vocals.

BOOTLEG: CURED PINK. BOUNDARY HOTEL, 16-1-10.

Cured Pink at the Unique Beautiful Flowers label fundraiser show held at the Boundary Hotel more than a few months ago, mid-January. I mentioned there that this event was shut-down about 2/3rds the way through. This was the point of the night where security came in and warned the organisers.

BOOTLEG: SUNSHINE STATE. BURST CITY, 18-6-10

SUNSHINE STATE

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?yntvwmxyddi

Features members from Monochrome Internationale & Point and Media. Super-low-key, dreamy reverb-drenched guitar-pop I’m thinking there’s a few Grouper, ‘Twins and Galaxie 500 posters on their walls. Perhaps a few spins of ‘Sister’, too. P&M’s ‘Ornament’ was my favourite local release of 2009 and damn it, I still occasionally listen to it even after microwaving it through my stereo last year.

Sunshine State has a cassette floating around, all gone but you can still ask them nicely maybe. Also, check out Charette Tapes.

BOOTLEG: STAG, LORD CHEZWELL, PASTEL BLAZE – BURST CITY, 12-6-10

STAG

Stag is a local all-girl four-piece ‘noisy-pop’ act, supergroup all-sorts. Second ever show, first in an actual venue.

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?b22yz2ghlyi

Hot cat-call-response punk sqwark with heavy emphasis on a simple rolling, stand-up-and-count drum beat in other words with a few Kleenex/Raincoats/Slits cards. Here tonight the bass guitar’s lead is fucked, the synth plays right over the top sometimes, the subtle & weird, wandering guitar which I had to really focus on… keeps everything interesting by creating messy, creased layers when it could very well have all been just another roadtrip down south if the gay neighbour found a house in Bali.

LORD CHEZWELL

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmmdmfznm1t

AKA Chelsea from Breinbeau. On his lonesome, sampler and mixer in front of a standing, dancing crowd. A fully realised set obviously with pre-recorded material spliced up skateboarding material but there’s breaks sub-genre skipping everywhere with your descriptions found in warp mart – the difference here (and I’m finding a lot of hash resin) is that it’s pulled off right, the audience calling out for more & the volume up after every song, and he doesn’t overstay his welcome rather keeping to a short 20 minute set that seems to fly right by & before the crowd can finish clapping I’m outside listening back to the recording.

PASTEL BLAZE

Download the full set recording here: http://www.mediafire.com/?j5zyjzeyz1m

Melodic hardcore-punk rawk with a distinct ‘pub rock’ attitude (I guess). Short set, ten minutes.

Eternal Soundcheck, once again, has some footage of this night which includes a clip of Greg Charles (6Majik9, Blonde Cobra, etc) performing a super-rare solo set of which made me really sad, slumped down into a lounge. The best part was at the last song of the set where the guitar-lead or input was being very temperamental and random, fuzz-laden chords were then fed into the amp but he worked with it, and damn it went well.

EVENT (W/E 20-JUN’10): DISEMBRAINING MACHINE #9. THE TIDY/ALCHEMIX – 20 JUN ’10

NICOLA MORTON (blog)

SPROT (Matt Earle/Adam Park)

MATTHEW KENNEDY

+ SECRET ACT (TBC)

20th JUNE 2010 – THE TIDY/ALCHEMIX STUDIOS – 29 LOGAN RD, WOOLLOONGABBA

7PM – FREE – AA + BYO

Nicola Morton was the brains behind that mindfuck performance-piece ‘Life Is A Rubik’s Cube‘ a while ago. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend but from the documentation left in the wake of the event my description is appropriate?

Sprot is Matt Earle (Breakdance the Dawn, xNoBBQx, etc) and Adam Park (Unique Oil Free Air, etc). Powerhouse collaboration between these underground figures. This will be great.

Matt Kennedy is the frontman for the masterpiece downer-pop act Kitchen’s Floor, and a member of a few others including-but-not-withstanding, The Harpy Choir, White Cop, Minxxxxx, French Horns, Look!Pond, etc (those last few are dead).
